CBD (Cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound of the Cannabis plant. Originating from Central Asia and the Indian Subcontinent making it one of the earliest plants to be cultivated. In more recent years, the therapeutic properties of CBD are now being tested and confirmed by scientists and doctors around the world. Becoming more accepted by the general public as an alternative to medicine to some of the worlds most common ailments.
Most commonly confused with its counterpart THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound that causes that high that Cannabis is famous for. CBD is the safe non-addictive counterpart. CBD is just one of approximately 113 different cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids) [May 2020] all of which play an essential role in our endocannabinoid system.
How Does CBD Work?
CBD and the other cannabinoids interact with our bodies in a variety of ways. The most commonly known is copying and increasing the effects of the compounds already found in our bodies called “endogenous cannabinoids”. So named because of their similarity to compounds found in the cannabis plant. The discovery of which has significantly advanced our understanding of health and disease and helps to explain how and why CBD and THC are such versatile compounds. Also, why cannabis is such a widely consumed plant, despite its illegal status.
CBD: So Much To Explore
As the prices of prescriptions and medical care rise, people are seeking alternatives to pharmaceuticals with harsh side effects. Becoming more aligned with the natural process of the earth. By tapping into how we function biologically on a deeper level, CBD can provide relief for chronic pain, anxiety, inflammation, depression and many other conditions.
Research and mounting anecdotal accounts from patients, physicians and customers of the growing CBD industry highlight it’s potential as a treatment for a wide range of ailments. Including (but not limited to):
- Autoimmune diseases (inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis).
- Neurological conditions (Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Huntington’s chorea, stroke, traumatic brain injury).
- Metabolic syndrome (diabetes, obesity).
- Neuropsychiatric illness (autism, ADHD, PTSD, alcoholism).
- Gut disorders (colitis, Crohn’s).
- Cardiovascular dysfunction (atherosclerosis, arrhythmia).
- Skin disease (acne, dermatitis, psoriasis).
One 2010 brain cancer study by scientists in California found that CBD makes THC even more potent as an anticancer substance. Also, in 2010 German researchers reported that CBD stimulates neurogenesis, the growth of new brain cells in adult mammals. The most substantial and most recent scientific evidence studied its effectiveness in treating some of the cruellest childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), which typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications.
Pharmaceutical CBD Vs. Shop Bought
The UK restrcit the CBD products that are available. Any respectful business should follow the strict rules and regulations surrounding CBD to ensure the safety of its customers. But there is very little in place to ensure that shop owners are sticking to the rules. First, the CBD in any product must come from industrial hemp containing less than 0.2% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) not the Cannabis plant as many believe due to the low THC level that consumers don’t get the same “high”.
Secondly, any respectable CBD retailer should be able to provide lab reports and cosmetic assessments to prove that the product is what it says it is and the strength it says it is. To ensure the safety of the customers, specific information must be available from the packaging of the product. Look out for more blog posts about this.
In November 2019, the NHS struck a deal with the manufacturer GW Pharmaceuticals to bring down the price of Epidyolex. European medicines agency approved this for children over the age of two who suffers from seizures associated with two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) and Dravet syndrome.
